PRODUCTION 101
The first step is to develop a sort of business plan for your video: define what is it you want to communicate, what the reaction should be, and who your audience or demographic is- tell a story. What do you want your audience to do after watching the video: buy your product, become more educated, or simply be entertained? What kind of production quality are you looking for: should it look like a motion picture, a newscast or a home movie? Will it have narration, use actors, or real people? Will it be shot on location, a studio or both? Generally, the more time & money spent on a project, the better it will look, sound & deliver.
TIME
A film (or video) production consists of three separate stages: (1) Pre-production is the development of the outline (or script), shooting plan, budget & scouting. (2) Production includes the actual shooting, talent (actors), props, graphics, sets, number of days, etc. (3) Post-production is the editing of the video, stills, graphics, narration & music- bringing it all together into the final cut of finished product. Depending on the needs of the project, the time required to finish most videos is roughly 30 days. However we can turn over projects in under 24 hours, if the need arises. Rush jobs may be accommodated for an additional fee.
BUDGETING
Generally speaking, the average budget for most low-to-medium sized productions is between $1000 to $3000 per minute of edited finished video. But this rule can be deceiving when trying to establish a budget: a 30-second high-end television car commercial can easily run $1,000,000 or more, while a full hour long event video can run just $1000. Higher budgets occur when the production involves more planning & development, more crew, professional talent, specialized equipment, more production days & numerous locations, complex studio sets, special choreography, animation, and fast-paced visuals or special computer effects. Lower budgets involve using existing video plus stills & can be as low as $500 per finished minute. Videotaped meetings, interviews & special events [such as weddings] do not follow this rule. These "videotape only" events are based on a day rate, with very little editing. Duplication & distribution are additional budget considerations and include making DVD's, printing collateral, shipping charges, web-posting and buying air-time.
